I know there are ground floor apartments available, and since I am becoming less agile, how easy is it to get around on the trains, busses, walking, etc. I'd like to take some daytrips and/or overnights. Went to Brugges 10 or so years ago, and would love to go back for a few days.

Hi,
My husbsand and I took the Holland Untours in October 2006 and found public transportation fantastic. The train schedule is issued annually and looks like a thick telephone directory. When a schedule states that a train leaves at 11:01, the train will leave at 11:01. Train travel is very easy and convenient. Only time we experienced a delay was when there was some trouble (we never did find out what it was) that closed one track to the airport and trains had to be rerouted. The trains were packed, but they ran with only slight delays.
Idyll gave us two strips of bus tickets and the bus stop was a short distance from our apartment; however, we rode buses only a couple of times, preferring to walk. We logged 5-8 miles most days. The terrain is flat so walking is easy. Just watch out for the bicycles that are everywhere and have the right of way. We enjoyed walking to the train station area (about a 20-minute hike) nearly every day and stopping in the Ethnology Museum nearby where we checked e-mail on their computers. We bought a museum pass first thing that gave us entry to that facility and several other museums during our two-week stay.
By the way, the LaPlace restaurant (cafeteria-style) in the train station has very good food. There's another one on top of the the Vroom & Dreesman Dept store that offers a great view of Leiden.
