the portable storage as a backup."
 
 
I do both, also. I take two digital cameras. An Olympus C-765 for it's  clean 
pictures and 10X optical zoom and a Cannon SD 700 IS for it's pocket size,  
good video clips, image stabilization, low light capabilities, fast shots on 
the  move. I have (7) 512 XD cards for the Olympus (small enough that 6 cards  
fit in a photo wallet in my pocket or bag) and (6) 1 MB SD cards for  the 
Cannon. I don't use large cards because I don't want to loose a lot if  something 
happens. Every night I download to a 20 GB Photo Harddisk. I don't  
erase/format the cards until/if I need to reuse them. This way I have 2 copies  of my 
photos.
 
I take 3 "manufacturers" batteries for each camera and usually use 2 a day.  
Yes, I take thousands of photos and do some editing on the cameras.
