Glad to hear someone mention the small Hotel Brunig Kulm restaurant
(around the corner and just out of sight from the Brunig train stop) as
a great little place to eat. It is one of our favorites and is rarely
mentioned, but offers a very nice menu, especially for dinner. While it
is frequented by the numerous motorcyclists who pass by, their patrons
also include many locals and they even accommodate bus tour groups
when the weather allows for dining on their terrace. One area of the
restaurant is quite formal and a former owner used to bring his cart to
your table (depending on your menu selection, of course) and prepare
the food to your taste.

The Kulm offers a small salad bar and one of their items which I tasted
for the first time was kohlrabi--a turnip/cabbage vegetable. Upon our
return to the U.S. I looked for and found it in a local supermarket. Salad
bars in Europe also usually include thinly sliced beets, that I had gotten
out of the habit of serving, but began using again upon our return home.

I spoke of this once before, but alpenmacarooni, like goulash, and apple
strudel is different just about everywhere you order it, yet is always
wonderful! The Brunig Kulm version of apple dessert is deep fried slices
of apples topped with sugar and cinnamon. You want ymmm...that's it!

We actually stayed there several nights on two or three separate occasions
as a way of extending our regular 2-wk Heartland tour and found the
accommodations to be sparse, but spotlessly clean and the small staff
extremely efficient. The breakfasts, which were included in the price were
also more than adequate.
