Gail,
You lucky, lucky woman to be going to Tuscany. We were there in Sept. 2004 and loved every minute of it. We drove around to different walled cities almost everyday and our favorite was Pienza. The parking isn't too bad and the town is just quaint. We did take a train to Sienna ( you can drive there easy enough too ) and liked it there too. It is bigger than Pienza but was easy to get around. We caught the train in Buonconvento.....there is a small unmanned station there where you can get tickets from the machine.
Buonconvento is a nice small town where you can grocery shop, bank and eat. They have a wonderful restaurant there.....can't remember the name but you can't miss it....I think it is the only one!
Montelchino was another great town.....good restaurants there......there's not much public parking though, so go early. If you are into the Etruscan history, Chuisi is a good place to visit. We drove there but you can take a train also. We did not get into the town of Murlo, but I have heard it is a beautiful place.
We stayed in Torrenerri, just outside of Buonconvento in a small, but lovely apt on a vineyard ( LaConica). If you like thin pizza, there is a pizzeria just outside of town.....it was the best. If you haven't tried Lemoncello, you have to try it there, too.
No matter where you go, you will love it, I'm sure. Sometimes we got lost but that was half the fun too.....found places we never would have gotten to otherwise:) The Tuscans are very warm and friendly people.....made us feel right at home.
