Last year we bought packets of rosti at the grocery stores, and kept them on hand in our Swiss Untours apt. Very convenient supper when coming home from a hike, especially with some wurst. Linda

However, the cholesterol police may catch up with us--all the talk of rosti (and all that butter) and raclette. And, rosti menus exist throughout the Heartland at many restaurants.

The meat with raclette is generally "wursts", or veal sausages, or the brat of choice, along with the potatoes and gerkins mentioned in another post. It is also traditional to drink white wine with raclette, although my husband and I choose beer instead. Don't forget to have a butter lettuce salad to start. I am totally addicted to the lettuce in CH, and now grow my own, as even in California, where lettuce is king, it does not compare to CH.

The Alpine noodles mentioned (also called Alpine Macaroni) is a dish served in the alps. You see the modest summer houses where the cows spend their summers in the meadows, and the cheesemakers live.. All of the ingredients are non-perishable--macaroni, alpine cheese and potatoes (speaking of cholesterol). Don't forget the applesauce! This dish is often cooked in a cast iron pot over a fire. It is fun to run into a family or two on a hike that are cooking this alpine specialty and the wursts. On some high walks, there may be a family that serves the hikers an alpine meal, gulash soup (and some home brewed "most"(sp?), a fruit wine). Our favorite family hutte meal is up the Bruni lift (from Engelberg), and then onward towards the hutte.

As for favorite meals, my very favorite (next to schnitzel of any kind) is the lake fish--small, tender white filets (egli or Forelle). Look for them around the fresh water lakes ,certainly at Bahnhofli Lungern and Kaiserstuhl. For a special meal, do not miss Hotel CHalet du Lac in Iseltwald for fish. This will be my birthday destination. See Hiking and Biking Guide, page 11. Yes, they do have Senior Portions if you are a light eater (and less $$$). The terrace is wonderful spot.

To my knowledge the bakery in Hoflu is not open, but will report when when we rerturn in late June.

  Back to packing. Cheers! Joan.

Yes, we loved the rosti too. I think we found that you could get packages at
the grocery store to cook at home. (It's been almost 15 years since we were there.)

We had raclette twice - once at the home of a friend who lives in Geneva and
once at the alphorn festival. Both were wonderful, and we've considered buying
raclette grills here at home (but they're so expensive!)

I think our favorite restaurant dish was the alpine noodles at the Bahnhof restaurant
in Lungern. I'd be interested to hear if they still serve those, and if they're still good,
  after all these years.

  Chris

Since there is a lull in the Idyllchat traffic lately, perhaps we can begin a new thread.

Jan’s favorite food in Switzerland is Rosti, and she has fallen in love with the vegetable Rosti. The only place we have found it (that we know how to return to) is at the Brunig Hotel in Hergiswil. Compared to most restaurants which offer only one or two types, they have a large Rosti menu. Does anyone know of other places that offer a large menu of Rosti dishes?

My favorite is Raclette, and I remember years ago that the Bahnhofli in Lungern had a wide selection of Raclette plates, with various meats, etc. I don’t think that is true any longer. Does anyone know of such a menu at any other restaurant?

We’d also be interested in hearing about anyone’s favorite dishes at special restaurants, reasonably priced, of course.

  Brian and Jan Cooley.
