Great hotel in Venezia is Hotel (Albergo) Bizanzio (might still be associated with Best Western)  near San Marco.  A great small place near everything. Check the Best Western web site.
   
  In Firenze, a favorite is the Pensione Silla (www.hotelsilla.it and hotelsilla at tin.it) Across the Arno from the Piazza Signorina.  Imagine strolling over the Ponte Vecchio to take in the great sights of this city.
