Could not give better advice...it may seem like a pain in the neck to have to dig for your wallet, but way easier than replacing it!
Here is a tip...for your pocket: carry an inexpensive wallet with a reasonable amount of euro for the day...not more than you could afford to lose. If you must carry plastic and big money around, keep that next to your skin!
On our last day in Rome we were tripped up by the oldest trick in the book...the baby gambit...even when you are holding your wallet in your hand and your hand in your pocket (which of course is a dead giveaway), when someone tosses a baby at you, you are going to reach out to catch it. And when you do, they are in and out of your pocket! Fortunately, two Roman gentlemen came to our aid and retrieved the wallet.
Feel free to give a coin or two to a curbside beggar; in fact, the Italians are very tolerant of them....but NEVER stop to give to a beggar who approaches you directly...they are usually not working alone.
Terry

This is for Florencetips: we were there about 10 years ago and enjoyed the city and its art a lot, but my wallet was stolen from my purse while I was admiring the interior of the beautiful Duomo, and that certainly had a negative effect on our vacation. If I had been wearing my wallet under my clothes, as Rick Steves directs, it wouldn't have happened. So, be careful!

Great lists, Pete.
I wound up baking my own bread there, as I found the local salt-free
bread tasteless (it's because they put a lot of salty stuff on it).
But the local flours are great.

THis list is such a wonderful resource and deals with so many charming and
rich restaurants, wines, and sites that I fear appear being a clod in asking
about the modest but tempting places in the city of Florence itself. We do not
have time to tour Tuscany since we are, for most part, museum bound, and
though guidebooks provide a wealth of civic information,we will treasure personal
tips about the city itself--information like that in the recent postings
about southern Tuscany.

We're going on a Tuscany Untour this summer, staying at Famiglia.
I know it's near Montalcino, but I was wondering if anyone knows
exactly where. I thought it would be fun to try to spot it on Google
Earth. If anyone can tell me it's "X miles out of town on road Y",
or even if you have lattitude and longitude, that'd be great.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi All,
A group of 5 women, ranging from 12 to 84, will be traveling to Northern Tuscany in October. Needless to say, we are all very excited! This will be our first Untours trip as well as our first overseas trip. We will be staying in Migliarino, near Pisa. We are planning on an overnight trip to Venice and also would like to plan on tacking Rome onto the end of our stay. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a Hotel in either of these places.
Our 12 year old traveler will be turning 13 while in Italy and we would like to do something special for her on her birthday. She has mentioned horseback riding or going to a zoo. Has anyone had an opportunity to horse back ride in Tuscany? I have read that horseback riding is available in Cinque Terra and Garfagnana by the hour. Also, has anyone been to the zoo in Pescia or is there another zoo that you could recommend? Or, how about the caves in Grotta de Vento? We are looking for something that would be fun for a teen ~ Any and all suggestions would be welcome.
If anyone has stayed at the Beccaccia and can offer any helpful hints or great places not to miss off the beaten path that would be great. I'm wondering how the weather will be in October??? I just can't wait to see the coastline.........
Thanks all ~
Kathy in Michigan

Why is it that some of the archived emails have no content? For example, several of the recent posts about South Tuscany are empty when archived. I often depend on the archives when 1) I unsubscribe to Idyllchat to avoid all the activity in my inbox 2) rely on the archives when my personal email isn't working (like now!) and 3) I want to search the archives for reference to a particular topic.
Can something be done to truly archive all of an email's content?

Kathy,
Welcome to the world of Untours......you're gonna love it! We took the Southern Tuscany Untour trip a few years ago and had a great time. I cannot give you advice as far as traveling with a teenager, but there will be others that can. I will say however, that a trip to Florence will be just the thing for all of you. There is the culture, of course, but the eating and the shopping would be great for a teenager I would think.
As far a hotels go, we stayed at the Hotel Lancelot while we were in Rome. It is right down the street from the Collesium. The owners speak wonderful English and there are trattorias nearby that are very good ( and prettty inexpensive ). Their website is: www.lancelothotel.com if you want any information.
We are spending a few days in Venice this coming Sept. after 2 weeks on the Amalfi coast. We are staying at the Hotel Orion.....just behind St. Mark's Square. We have not stayed there before, but in corresponding back and forth with the owners, they are very friendly and helpful. Rick Steeves has them listed in his Venice book as being recommended. Their website is: www.hotelorion.it .
I almost forgot to mention that while in Rome this time for a few days also, we will be staying at a convent ( not far from the collesium ). We like to try different things all the time!! I don't have a website for them but I emailed them directly and heard back in just a few days. Their email is: irodopre at tin.it . There are 3 of us women going and the rate for a triple room with private bathroom and breakfast is 117euros per night......a pretty good price for Rome. It is run by the Spanish nuns and was recommended to me by one of the Untourtists whose daughter uses it all the time while in Rome.
The weather in Rome the last time we were there in Septemer was warm......high 70's, low 80's. I should think it will be a few degrees cooler in Northern Tuscany.
You will have a great time.....how lucky for the 5 of you. If you need any more information, please don't hestitate to write.
Donna
Michigan, too:)
