[Idyllchat] American Express office - Traveler's Checks

I have always just used ATMs, but friends of mine use Travelers Checks. The
last time I was in Rome (which was a while ago, they were still using lire),
the Amex Office was near the Spanish Steps. The American Express website
still lists a Travel Services office at Piazza di Spagna 38 which is at the
bottom of the Spanish Steps. I believe they charged a fee for converting
them into local currency just like a money changer would. I believe their
rates were better than going to a regular Cambio, but since I wasn't doing
the exchange, I can't remember.
The best rates used to be had by just using an ATM, but over the last 2
years, some banks have started adding a surcharge for using an international
ATM. I haven't done the math to see whether they are still better or not. I
do think they are way more convenient. I was in Edinburgh last November, and
every bank had an ATM which I could use anytime. I didn't have to hunt down
a money exchange office or open bank branch.
Another option that Amex has now is a "Travel Card" which has all the
protections of regular traveller's checks, but you can use it as a credit
card or use it in an ATM. It is a debit card which means you pay them up
front like with traveller's checks, and they reduce your balance as you use
it. You can check with them for more information.
