When we were traveling on our own I took a conversational German course at
our local Community College a number of years ago. The German instructor, Hyde
Flippo, who has written several books about Germany that are great to read
before making a trip there, (Google him for the titles) had his students buy
the German-English/English-German version as a reference book. It has traveled
with us on every trip since to Germanic speaking countries.
During our 2000 Christmas sojourn to Germany my husband became quite ill in
a very small village we were staying in as an exchange for our timeshare. I
called the only number in the "HELP" booklet in the unit which was the
ambulance service. The dispatcher spoke English and asked if I would like a doctor to
come out instead of an ambulane. I did. When the doctor arrived (and, truly,
on a very dark and stormy night) he held in his hand his copy of the
English/ German-German/English. We got along famously and all went well.
Incidentally, the cost of the doctor's two hour visit, the taxi that
delivered the medications the doctor ordered, and the medications themselves cost us
just under $100 American! Almost makes you want to take up residency there.
Another good small book to have with you is "The Marling German Menu Master"
It lists every conceivable item one would find on a menu so you can identify
the item before ordering. They also have one for French menus and I believe
in Italian also.. They are very small, thin breast pocket books so no problem
carrying them along.
