We've been on the Tuscany South and Umbria Untours and found it very easy to drive around - though we also found the Venice Untour where one doesn't drive equally wonderful. We've never felt the need for professional guides because we often got a lot of informal information from folks in museums, restaurants, other Untourists and, of course, the better guidebooks (we like Cadogan). The most important Italian phrase you want to master is: I'm very sorry but I don't speak Italian (or I speak very little Italian) and most Italians will immediately feel sorry for you and try to help you out - even if their English is less than your Italian. The folks who act as if all the world should speak English are usually the only ones who find not speaking Italian a problem. You will love Untours - they are the best!
