A couple of other things one might consider doing while Untouring on the
Rhine as we did a few years back.
A day trip to Limberg on der Lahn is a treat. A lovely old town with many
half timbered houses and a great cathedral museum. Also a really good pastry
shop in the newer shopping district one passes through to get to the older part
of town. We also enjoyed a good lunch at one of the department stores on this
same street.
An easy hike up to the magnificent Eltz castle above the Mosel River. Take a
train to Moselkern and walk through the village to pick up the path through
"fairy" woods (one expects to see a gnome or two here) which leads to the base
of the castle. It is here that the most difficult part of the walk starts
and that is because you have to climb steps up the side of the mountain to the
castle itself. Stopping to rest now and then makes the climb easier. I was 72
at the time and huffed and puffed my way up with no lingering after
effects. There are signs in Moselkern that will direct you to the path but if you
miss them ask any resident and they will point you on your way. It's about a 45
minute lovely walk.
And be sure you spend some time in wonderful old Bacharach. More timbered
homes and a castle here. It is also one of Untour's apartment towns. If you get
there and want to pick up some nice things to bring home (wine glasses,
clocks, etc.) be sure to visit Phil Jost's shops. There is a smaller one just
across the side street from the large church in the center of town and a larger
branch up that side street and behind the smaller store. Lots of lovely
goodies here from steins to fine china. They do ship. I have been in Bacharach on
4 different German trips and never miss a chance to stop there.
Oh, and also in Rudesheim you'll find a marvelous clock and music museum.
Well worth seeing.
Enjoy Germany. It is high on our "favorite places" list.
