I concur with everything said about Umbria EXCEPT the drive from Venice to  
Umbria was NOT a piece of cake for us.  We were held up for over 2 hours  plus 
(that is, just sitting with nothing moving) outside Bologna.  My  husband took 
a nap, I read.  Fortunately, neither of us had to use a rest  room and we had 
some snacks.  The traffic was backed up for miles and  we never did find out 
why.
 
When we finally got moving there was a dash for the next exit with  
facilities and I think everyone got off there. 
 
We mentioned the reason for being late checking into our apartment and all  
the Italians looked wise, and said oh that's not unusual.
 
As to the drive to Rome, it is bad, but I've been in worse.  Around  the 
airport it really takes all your concentration to read the signs and head in  the 
right direction.  A glass of vino is appropriate afterwards.
