Verizon (and Sprint for that matter) uses a technology called CDMS which is
incompatible with Europe. CDMS is used in the US, parts of South America and
parts of Asia. The majority of the world uses a technology called GSM which
is used by Cingular and T-Mobile. Europe also uses different carrier
frequencies than we do in the US, so unless you have a "quad-band" GSM
phone, you can't use it in Europe.
There is nothing, however, stopping you from snapping pictures with your
Verizon phone even if you don't have service. You just won't be able to
share them until you get back to the States.
