Rick Steve's books are a great reference. My opinion differs from his on how
long to spend somewhere, but he does point out the highlights and gives you
a jumping off point.
One note on Rick Steve's guides, the last time I was in Florence, every
restaurant he mentions in his book had a line around the corner to get in.
In Florence, it is real hard to go wrong when finding someplace to eat. Our
favorite method for finding a restaurant was to wander around a neighborhood
until we found someplace that looked nice. Not that hard to do. We actually
ate at a one place twice, not realizing it was the same place until we went
inside. We had come at it from 2 different directions and didn't realize we
were back in the same neighborhood at first.
