Yes, invest in some guide books and start reading. My preference,
especially for a first tripper and the places you mentioned, would be
Rick Steves Italy book. My second preference is Lonely Planet. RS is
opinionated in comparison to LP. But I am assuming you don't have
enough time to see everything and his book will help you sort out the
what and how to do the highlights.
