A valid US drivers license is good for anywhere in western Europe including
the UK and Ireland which have that whole wrong side of the road thing. I
have rented cars in Germany, the Netherlands, and Scotland with no problems.
One thing you do have to look out for when renting a car in Europe is that
most Europeans drive manual shift cars. You can rent an automatic, but you
have to specify it, and they will charge you more. The first time I rented a
car in Europe, I was traveling with my boss. I got behind the wheel and
said, "Wow, it's a stick!" My boss looked at me with panic and asked if I
could drive it. I said, "Yeah, no problem. I just didn't expect it in a
rental." In Europe, expect a "stick" in a rental.
