[Idyllchat] Medical Insurance overseas

Bill,

I can't answer about the drivers license, etc. However, a comment on
his company medical coverage. My experience was that he has to
contact the medical insurance carrier themselves, not the employer
people. The medical carrier is the one who he will have to do battle
with anyway.

For what it is worth, I found out that in my case (BC/BS of Michigan)
I would be covered BUT I would have to pay for any expenses while
there and file the claims forms with them after I returned for
reimbursement. Fortunately, we never needed medical attention while
out of the country. If your nephew looks into supplementary medical
coverage, be aware that many of the short term traveler's policies
have medical coverage as secondary coverage. i.e. they will only pay
after a primary carrier has paid. If your nephew's insurance would be
like mine, that sort of supplementary coverage would not likely be of
much value to him.

A side note: A few years ago we knew a person who had to be
hospitalized for a couple weeks in France. She is Canadian. In her
case because of her national health coverage system, there was co-
ordination with the French hospital and she was covered there! I
don't know any of the details but she was relieved that it worked out
that easily.
