Dear Bob,
Thanks very much for the suggestions about the hikes and even where to find descriptions of them in the Idyll book. I'm sure our two weeks in the Heartland will be happily full.

Vail,
The following are four of our favorite hikes that are in the Idyll book. I've also included the Idyll hike number and page number.
Brienzer Rothorn to Schonbuel D5 p. 22
Planplatten to Balmegghorn D3 p.19
Grosse Scheidegg to First C5 p.15
Jochpass D4 p. 21
Not in the Idyll book is the Eiger trail which is shown on the Jungfraubahnen map that you can pick up in any station in the Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald area. This is a superb hike. We start our hike at the Eiger Glacier Station or Kleine Scheidegg and catch the train back to Grindelwald from Alpiglen.
Vance Roy has been invaluable in providing information on IdyllChat about hikes he has taken. As a matter of fact it was his posting that put us on the Eiger trail a few years ago. He also answered this posting with some great new information. Thanks Vance for all your postings.
Hal Taussig and Ron Fahnestock and did an excellent job on the Idyll book, but it hasn't been updated in a long time. I have written to Idyll and asked that they consider a supplement. It might be compiled from Idylers who have hiked in different areas.

Many keep up to date on happenings in CH on swissinfo.org. Part of the website is a video link in the lower left center of the website. Today's video "Climb Every Mountain" is well worth watching. Videos change frequently, so if interested you might try it today or tomorrow.

There is a Sierra Club Tote book entitled "Footloose in the Alps". I was written 25-30 years ago and I doubt that it is still available. However, I gave my copy to Francy Douglas-Breon at Untours several years ago, and it should still be in their files. There is a challenging overnight hike that is best accessed from the Oberland area. It is described in the Sierra Club book and should be considerd as a challenging, overnight hike. Francy might be able to make you a photocopy of the description of this hike.
Go by train to Sierre in the Rhone Valley and there take a postal bus up to the village of Ayer . From there follow a trail across
the Meidpass (8400 feet) and down to the village of Gruben. When we did this hike in 1976, we stayed at the rustic Schwarzhorn hotel. Next day climb up over the Augstbordpass (8700 feet) and then steeply down to St. Niklaus where you can catch the train up to Zermatt or back to Visp and Brig.
This is a tough hike.

Bob,
I just have to say what a role model you are for me. I am 51 & part of my
retirement dream is to hike a lot in CH. Thank you for letting me know it
is possible. I remember one older woman on our Heartland trip a couple of
years ago. That woman hiked ambitious hikes each day & always looked happy
but exhausted. I hope I have this to look forward to.
