[Idyllchat] New Heartand Hikes

Adding to the hikes that others mentioned, my most favorite hike that my husband and I took last summer on Untours was one we did spontaneously, not in the Idyll book. After we'd completed the "Grandmother's Walk" , as Untours calls it, from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, and stopped at a cafe, we crossed the railroad tracks there, and took the marked Bergweg trail on to Wengernalp. It was the end of June, and the glaciers had run-off brooks trickling by, with loads of flowers blooming in the grass of the meadows surrounding us that our trail went through. Looming beside us were the cliffs of much higher mountains across the valley. We caught the train at Wengernalp. Next time we go, I want to hike the rest of the way down to Wengen.

We also were very impressed with the hike in the Lotchental area, south of Kandersteg and the tunnel. Stunning view of glaciered mountains while you walk through woods, meadows, and across brooks. But I recommend going the opposite way from the description in the Untours Hike and Biking Guide, so you can take a cable car up from Wiler to Lauchenalp, a high point; hike east, which is very gradually down hill (2/3 of the way is a good cafe beside the trail) to the easternmost point of the trail, Falflernalm, where you catch the bus back to the train station.

          Vail,

The following are four of our favorite hikes that are in the Idyll book. I've also included the Idyll hike number and page number.

  Brienzer Rothorn to Schonbuel D5 p. 22
  Planplatten to Balmegghorn D3 p.19
Grosse Scheidegg to First C5 p.15
  Jochpass D4 p. 21

Not in the Idyll book is the Eiger trail which is shown on the Jungfraubahnen map that you can pick up in any station in the Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald area. This is a superb hike. We start our hike at the Eiger Glacier Station or Kleine Scheidegg and catch the train back to Grindelwald from Alpiglen.

Vance Roy has been invaluable in providing information on IdyllChat about hikes he has taken. As a matter of fact it was his posting that put us on the Eiger trail a few years ago. He also answered this posting with some great new information. Thanks Vance for all your postings.

Hal Taussig and Ron Fahnestock and did an excellent job on the Idyll book, but it hasn't been updated in a long time. I have written to Idyll and asked that they consider a supplement. It might be compiled from Idylers who have hiked in different areas.
