[Idyllchat] New Hearlant Hikes

This is a message to Bob Johnson, message 6.  We will be in the Heartland July 4 - 17, our first time there.  You said you have some hikes that are your favorites that you repeat - could you please tell me what some of those are?  Thanks!

I am not talking about the auto insurance that is inherent in your Amexco 
card. I am talking about their premium insurance which you have to sign up 
for with them. The charge is $25 per rental. It is automatically in effect 
when you charge your car rental with any of the Amexco card.

Thank you for such a detailed reply and all the links as well! I appreciate you taking the time and effort to send all of it. I have saved it and we will follow up on some of your suggestions. Bologna, despite its fame as a culinary haven, doesn't seem to have much written about it.

My group will be returning our rental car to Siena after our Untours stay and traveling onto Rome by train. Is there another place that we could return the rental that would be closer to Rome?

We'll be at the Ada Teresa near Montalcino beginning 9/26/07 and would love to hear from others that will be there then.

Hi Diane,
My daughter's mother-in-law and I will be staying at Angiolino near Montalcino from 9/26 also. Don't know about the car thing near Rome as we are dropping ours in Florence so we can spend the last couple of days there.
The IdyllChatters are such a great resource, I'm sure someone can help.

In preparing for our return to the Heartland this year, we are trying to assemble a list of new hikes that aren't in the Idyll Hiking and Biking Guide. We've taken most of those and have many favorites that we take again and again, but we always like to explore new possibilities.

One area that we are researching is the Andermatt/Goschenen area. Has anyone hiked out of Andermatt on day hikes -- if so, where and how long are they? In addition to mountains, I understand that Teufelsbrucke bridge and Schollenen Canyon are interesting.

I have not done this yet, but there is a hike out of Goeschenen that 
sounds good. I think you take a bus to get to the start and then go 
for the Goeschenensee. Another is out of Meiringen to the Gelmersee 
and around it. Take a postal bus in the direction of the Grimsel Pass 
and get off at Handeck. Across the road and up a path about 5 min. is 
the funicular ride up. I think that they have also an over-road 
walkway now from the hotel at Handeck. The round the lake walk is 
fantastic. See pics below.

My friend and I were in Tuscany South 3 years ago and we dropped off our rental car in Chuisi. The Avis rental shop was right across the street from the train station. We dropped ours off before the shop was open, so they told us to drop the keys off in the cafe bar next door! We left the keys there and the car in the Avis parking lot and everything worked out fine. I think the ride to Rome was about 1 1/2 hours. The drive to Chuisi from Torreneri (near Buonconvento ) was about 1 hour ( in a heavy dense fog, I might add:) ). We were there the first 2 weeks in Sept. Just an afterthought about the train.....don't expect any help from any porters or Italian gentlemen with your bags. They will look at you but won't offer to help. We did have a kind hiker from the Netherlands that did give us a hand. Of course we overpacked......a mistake we won't make again. Have fun.

Donna used the same place that we used before going to Rome - Chuisi is very
convenient and as she says the rental place is right across from the train
station and there is gas station a block further up that street to top off
the tank! 

But for the final say in all of this - check with your Untour Italy
representatives in Media, PA for the latest information on places that you
can leave your car - these things do change and they always have the latest
information on these types of questions. 

So give Untours a toll free call and clear that question up - and report
back to the rest of us!
