We just returned from a two-week trip in the Emilia-Romagna area, visiting the cities of Ferrara, Bolonga, Modena, Parma, and Ravenna. We loved Ferrara, and would recommend it for an overnight stop and dinner. You could then tour Bolonga the next day, on the way to Tuscany. (Bolonga is a college town, and very busy).

We stayed at a wonderful B&B inside the walled city of Ferrara, the Locanda Borgonuovo (011+39+0532+211100, http://www.borgonuovo.com/index-eng.html). Dinner was at the Ristorante Ca'd Frara, Via del Gambero 4, 0562-205027, just a block from the B&B. They specialize in the food of the region, and you can get a wonderful Tortellini alla Bolognese in Brodo, as good as any you will find in Bologna. If you want a great restaurant in Bologna, try Trattoria Caminetto d'Oro, Via de'Falegnami 4, 051-263494. It is a favorite of Mario Batali, of Food Network fame.

For a even more memorable experience, spend a night at Agriturismo Villa Gaidello, located just east of Modena in the town of Castelfranco Emilia, http://www.gaidello.com/. Make sure you have reservations at their "Club Gaidello" restaurant, which serves a 5-course dinner that you will talk about for many years. (It finishes with a glass or two of Liquore Nocino, brewed from walnuts grown on the Agriturismo.)

Make sure you make reservations in advance (day before) for any of the great Emilia-Romagna restaurants. They are all very popular with the local Italians.
