Patricia and others:
We too are going to Italy this fall (two weeks in Tuscany North and a week
in Venice) and face the same decision.
We have always bought the extra insurance on our driving UnTours. And we
never had a dent until Spain. It happened unnoticed by us until several days
later - apparently while we were parked a few days earlier (remember how
they park in Europe - you can hardly get a playing card between the bumpers
or parked cars!). So - no police report - no other driver to talk to in
Spanish - nothing! When the car was returned they did note the damage, but
since we were covered we simply checked out and were on our way. I can't
imagine trying to deal with the paper-work and police reports in a language
and culture that we really don't understand. I also am wary of the fine
print in the other contracts of those promising to take care of this. We
have used travel insured for our other coverage, but we are still going to
buy the extra coverage. I can hear the sighs and moaning across the
Internet! Its OK. This trip is costing a fortune anyway because of the
dollar sinking ever lower against the Euro. So forward thinking folks
stockpiled Euros back when you could buy one for 80 cents...................
The real problem is that Italy requires the extra insurance and then they
have a large deductible - the extra insurance that you buy covers the
deductible part. Having driven in Italy before I think I would always get
the extra fullest no-hassle coverage every time! I am surprised we got by
without dents and dings the last time!
I might be wasting some money, but peace of mind is wonderful as well - and
as someone else wrote - the wine in Italy is cheap (and good) and the cheese
is wonderful to go with it.
All this discussion makes one long for Switzerland or Germany where you can
just take the train or bus or boat and forget about the car!

Subject: [Idyllchat] Auto Insurance
We just received our planning package for our Untour in Northern Tuscany,
Oct. 10-24. We spoke with the rep about the auto insurance. She told us
that if we have trip cancellation insurance with Travel Insured, their
recommended provider, (and we do) that since the end of 2006 they have added
a CDW Protection policy included in the coverage.
I know that most on this list recommend getting the extra insurance beyond
what comes with the Avis Rental.
Would those of you who have done this, still purchase additional insurance
even if you now have the CDW included in the Trip Cancellation Policy? When
we look at the chart, it appears redundant.
Have any of you had to use the CDW included in the Trip Cancellation Policy?
If so, was it handled easily?
Thanks, in advance, for sharing your experience and opinions.
