[Idyllchat] Auto Insurance

I spoke to the Untours office recently regarding the use of American
Express for our upcoming trip to Tuscany in September.  I was told by a
member of the Untours staff that since they do not accept American Express
the car rental agency would not accept it either.  Please let me know if
your experience is different since this would help us defray some insurance
costs.

I never buy the Rental Companies insurance. I rent using my American
Express card. American Express covers the CDW. I had a rental car counter
person try to tell me they don't, so I called American Express. They said
they absolutely do. If you are unsure, you can always call American Express
and ask them if they cover the CDW in whatever country you are traveling
to. They covered the insurance in Scotland last fall.

When I have traveled on business with a corporate AmEx, we were instructed
not to take the extra insurance. AmEx covered it and we would not be
reimbursed for that money if we did take it.

Since you have to use a credit card to rent a car, I always use AmEx and I
never buy extra insurance.
