[Idyllchat] what to do with post-checkout luggage?

We will be in Rome for several days and will want to train to Florence in the late afternoon.  What can we do with our luggage between a morning check-out and mid-day boarding?

After 9/11 we found, during a short stop in Pisa, that, for security reasons, the train station had removed storage lockers where one could leave luggage for several hours...so we never got to the leaning tower.  We were told that this convenience was no longer available in any train station.

Dos anyone know if this is still in force, or have any other suggestions, other than hoping that our hotel or B & B will hold it for us?
