I did it just yesterday by phone with no trouble.  The number to call is
011 39 055 294 883
(011 is the international access code, 39 is the country code for Italy)
You'll get a "press 1 for Italian, press 2 for English" and then get
connected
to an English speaking person who can make the reservation for you.
Call during the day in Italy - I called about 7:00 AM Pacific time.
They'll give you a reservation code.

Oops, sorry, forgot to say that this was just for the Uffizi.  Haven't tried
Academia yet.
