Yes, Jean is right! Every Tuesday the new specials begin. You will find the specials posted just before you enter the market section. Also, the specials are listed in the complimentary "20 Minuten", located every morning at the rail station. Great way to practice your German.

Also, when I first started shopping I would look in the grocery carts of the Swiss women. You learn a lot that way, as they are very thrifty.

I hit the jackpot this year. I always bring home Exquisito ground coffee from Migros (and chocolate of course). It was on "Aktion"--on sale when we arrived. Five packages should get me through November. Then back to Peets or Starbucks at more than twice the price, and not as good. Not everything is more expensive in CH. Joan.

We agree with Joan, the markets are great, everything is there and more--- there are English speaking clerks
to help, also the Frozen Lasagna is very good, and an easy meal to prepare at the end of a busy day!!
I believe the sale days at Migros start on Tuesday, maybe Joan can tell you!! And all the chocolate, you
want to eat a whole large aisle is displayed, what choices to make!!! Have fun and be adventureous!!!

Grocery shopping in the Heartland is like dying and going to heaven! We live in the bay area--California, and are surrounded by Farmer's markets with an outstanding array of vegetables, fruit, cheese, fish, etc.and chi chi grocery stores. But, we love to shop in Switzerland. As Vance mentioned, we are close to Sarnen and often shop at Migros. The grocery store in Sachseln, Denner's, is smaller but very competitive. Produce comes from interesting locations in Europe. It would be unusual if you did not see the "origin" of the produce marked on the price label. (Something we are now dealing with in US, due to some questionable sources in China. Tasting Italian melons will break your heart they are so sweet. Love the "squeezy" tubes of mustard (senf) and flavored mayonnaise. They have ketchup now, but we abstain for the month we are in CH. Miracle Whip has also appeared in Europe (ha!).

Then there is the pasta selection! Not only the pasta itself, but many different types of sauces. No need to cook from scratch.

Also, Vance mentioned the local butchers. Some really different cuts and marinated meats in these family run businesses. Leap into the breach and try something different.

When we are returning from a hiking destination via Interlocken West, we always stop at the new Migros there. Its a wow! I guarantee it beats anything here in the US. Wide isles, air conditioned, outstanding bakery, a stunning variety of bread! And you can stop for a coffee, cappaccino, latte and a sweet. When you check out, there are also little bottles of freuit schnappes. Think the locals might just add those to the coffee? The Coop just across the Plaza from Interlocken Ost is just as snazzy. Their vegetable display is a work of art.

You probably wonder if I am tipping the scales at 300 lbs. after this description. No, and I can honestly say, after four weeks, I returned 5 lbs. lighter--even downing my favorite chocolate (Noxanas from Migro--dark chocolate with hazelnuts--sigh)I That is due to the walking, and a little upslope to Chalet Berit in Sachseln several times a day. I am in the process of preparing a "grocery" photo array for the website, just because of questions like yours. Once you see these photos, you'll be ready to shop. Don't forget to bring your canvas/string bags for shopping.

Happy shopping and travel planning. Cheers. Joan.

      Hi,

We are going on an untour in the Swiss heartland in a few weeks - Giswil to be specific. We are planning on doing most of our own cooking. Does anyone have any advice about what types of food we should expect to find in Swiss groceries?

      Thanks,

      Guy
