Hi Arlene: Agree with other posters. You can get away with very little French, but it is desirable to learn essential phrases (described by others)
.
If you have time, I would recommend RosettaStone language CD's. I do not have an "ear" for language study. I try to work on my entry level German for 30 minutes a day. I am making some headway now. At least it gives you a feeling for the proper pronunciation.
Those of you who know the Greutert family in Sachseln will appreciate this story. I am with Berit up in Melchsee Frutt, muttering some German phrases. Finally, Berit said "why is Otto blue?". The muttered phrase was "Das Auto is blau".
Now I know how to pronounce "auto", and it isn't like poor blue "Otto". We had a good laugh, and it proves old dogs can learn new tricks!
Also, I learned some basic French phrases for a trip to Normandy. We chunneled from London to Lille, and needed to locate our small hotel. So I learned how to ask for the directions to the hotel--practising every day. When we arrived I went to the Information desk and proudly asked directions. The lovely young man said (in perfect English) "you deserve high marks for your French. The hotel you want is just down the road".
Have fun planning and learning! Joan.
