Linda,
I would suggest Galway for a central west coast location in Ireland.  It has 
great Band B's lots to see and do in the city itself and train connections 
to Dublin, etc.  My friend braved driving there and she did wonderfully 
well.  The traffic is light almost anywhere on the west coast except the 
Ring of Kerry, do Dingle instead.  Have soup and brown bread at McSwigans 
and fresh salmon from the Corrib River every day.
