With all the excitement of the NBC Today Show taping, I completely forgot
to look up the Scottish Geneaology information.
Here is the information:
1) Glasgow
Prior to our trip we wrote to The Mitchell Library, North Street, Glasgow,
G3 7DN, telephone: 041-287 2999, Fax: 041-287 2815. Their hours are
Monday-Thursday: 9:00am to 8:00pm, Friday & Saturday: 9:00am to 5:00pm.
Since we had written to the Library ahead of time, Dr. Irene O'Brien and her
colleagues were ready for us when we arrived. They knew we had a limited
amount of time. They were a tremendous help.
2) Edinburgh
Here we also wrote ahead of time to let them know we were coming to do
research:
Mr. Robert Lawson
Head of Registration Branch
General Register Office for Scotland
New Register House
Prince Street
Edinburgh Scotland, U.K. EH1 3YT
Phone (0131) 314 4459
Fax (0131) 314 4400
Email: nrh.gros at gtnet.gov.uk
At the Register House, you have to reserve a time period ahead of time for
a fee. It was not cheap. I cannot find the actual fee that we paid. But
that you'll find out when you contact them. Mr. Lawson happened to be
sitting next to us on the plane from Heathrow to Glasgow. He showed up in
person the next day at the New Register House to see how we were doing.
They give a half hour of instruction on how to find information on the
computers. It was so easy. You just have to be prepared with as much
information as possible when you arrive.
Keep in mind that this information is 10 years old, so the names and/or
numbers may have changed. But you should probably be able to look up the
current information on the internet.
I believe we spent two days at both Glasgow and Edinburgh doing the
research.
Good luck!
