There have been quite a few comments on use of credit cards and/or ATM cards overseas. I have my account with Eastman Credit Union here in Kingsport, TN. ECU was originally a part of Eastman Chemical Co. (formerly a subsidiary of Eastman Kodak but spun off as a separate company in 1994) but ECU itself spun off from ECC and is now independent. They are now a community credit union. They make no charges for ATM withdrawals overseas but the overseas ATM owner might.

If you are interested in exploring the possiblity of joining ECU, you can make a toll free call to 1-800/228-2328. You might qualify. I laughingly say that all you need to do is know how to spell "Eastman" and they'll give you three chances on that!

We experienced this transaction within the last two years at hotels in several places in Europe. The latest was at the Allegro Hotel close to the Zurich Airport. The option to charge in US dollars always figures higher. One other interesting switch was by our last hotel in London offered a 3% discount if we paid in cash at checkout. That was a significant saving. Credit cards are becoming very expensive for both the merchant and the customer.

As for cash, we never use a Visa or MC debit card. We use a bank ATM card. The only bank in Dallas that issues an ATM only card is Regions. However. they do charge $1.50 per withdrawal when using a foreign bank. This is cheaper than Visa or MC.
