Then they must have closed the one that was literally across the 
street from the station entrance. I did quite a bit of homework on 
this but find no Avis location anywhere in the area from their site 
and have written them trying to clear this up.

Do you know the town outside of Chiusi to which you refer?

I cleared up one other detail while searching. The drive from the 
Chiusi area to  Rome's Fiumicino Airport takes under two and one half 
hours on the A1 Autostrada. The problem with the 
Buonconvento/Montalcino area is that there is absolutely no good 
direct route to Rome. You either drive over an hour east to catch A1, 
take the SS2 south (a slower but closer route), or head to Grosseto 
on the coast.
