[Idyllchat] Comparing Tuscany South and Umbria

We've been to both and loved Tuscany and then loved Umbria. Umbria is easier to get around, I think, and had many fewer tourists though we went soon after 9/11 so it could have been impacted by that. We stayed at the Casale property in the L'Oleandro apt. and were very comfortable. Except for Assisi (which was manageable but very busy like Sienna) the towns seemed less crowded and more livable rather than so touristy as much of Tuscany is. We especially enjoyed our day in Orvieto (beautiful drive there) as well as neighboring Spoleto which we visited several times - it was my husband's favorite Italian town. The small towns of Trevi, Deruta, Spello are lovely and we even enjoyed Perugia which is definitely a "big" city. The Umbrian food seemed a bit less sophisticated in our eyes - more country and farm food - but equally as delicious as Tuscan fare.
I think Sicily would be very different from Tuscany whereas Umbria is only a bit different (being practically next door). Perhaps someone who's been to Sicily can let us know about that.

Subject: [Idyllchat] Comparing Tuscany South and Umbria
We went to Tuscany South last year and are considering going to Umbria. We loved the rolling hills of Tuscany South and are not sure if the mountainous region of Umbria will be a let down after experiencing such picturesque villages. I hear that Umbria is less touristy, quieter and a bit more industrial. If anybody has experienced both areas, I would appreciate any comparisons that might help us decide whether or not to make Umbria our next Untours. We are also thinking of Sicily instead of Umbria. Any opinions on Sicily would also be appreciated.
Grazie Mille,
Franco
