Gosh Doris, that's awful! We were in Roussillion in 2005 for most of a day so can't say we have much experience there however I sketched in front of several places and no one said a word. Maybe a sketch is different than a photo? As I think about it I also took lots of pics as it's good reference material for painting. Maybe she was just having a really bad day but that would certainly put me off the town for good. Just shows it only takes one person to give a whole town, area, country a bad name. In this case two given the hotel that refused a cup of hot water. That's really amazing to me as we've never encountered outright rude people in France. We've been pointedly ignored in Paris by waiters when we had the nerve to actually go in when they opened their doors at 7 PM for dinner though. Crazy Americans, expect to eat THAT early!?!?! A piece of bread and some water would have been nice touches while we waited the hour until they were ready to stop talking and ask if if
we wanted a menu. It's what makes travel interesting. And why you should carry snacks.

We've been to Provence with Untours and absolutely loved it and the people
we met there. They couldn't have been nicer to us. Some did let us know,
however, that although they loved Americans, they do not like our current
President and his policies. We were in Alsace last spring and found the
people there to be just as friendly and welcoming.

One note about Roussillion in Provence which was mentioned in another email:
we did go there and it is very beautiful but the shopkeepers were not so
nice there. Once I tried to take a picture of a very pretty little store and
the owner came out screaming that it was not allowed to take photos of her
shop. I could have understood her requesting no photos - but not the way she
did it. It is not at all a welcoming place which is surprising because it is
very touristy. We wouldn't go back there but would definitely go back to
Provence.
