I always try to learn a few basic phrases in the language of the country I'm
going to. The only place I didn't do this for was Iceland basically because
I couldn't find a reference. It's only polite.
However, in Switzerland, we had no problems finding people who spoke English
where ever we went. As a matter of fact, the Japanese tourists could find a
Japanese speaker in most places. Many people in Switzerland speak multiple
languages, especially shopkeepers and innkeepers.
I am taking a Heartland tour in September, and our landlord does not speak
English. So, knowing this a head of time, I'm trying to learn more German
than "please", "thank you", and "I would like..."
