Betty,
My advice for trips anywhere in Western Europe is to take some cash
in US bills as a backup but stick to ATM's. We have used ATM's in
most of the Western Europe countries and Prague with absolutely no
problem. We haven't taken travelers checks in 10 years now. It is my
understanding that they are getting more and more difficult to cash
at other than banks and large hotels.
