Thank you Pat.  Very interesting Web site.  

Quite a few years ago we were traveling in Italy and were surrounded by a group of young gypsies coming up the stairs from the train station.  They zeroed in on my husband. The only thing they got was a writing pen.  I did not carry a purse, everything I needed was hidden under my clothes as was his.

They put up cardboard like screens around him and made lots of noise.  I made motions with my hands and said loudly basta, which I think means thats enough in Italian, and they disappeared as fast as they arrived.

While riding on a bus around the Colosseum we saw the young people working the tourists.

I have returned to Italy a number of times and plan to return again.  It is the element of surprise that gets you.  We are very careful and will continue to do so.

We will be in St.Petersburg in July, thanks for the info on that location.  Kind of scary.

  I bought a "personal alarm".  It is a little battery operated device that you can attach to a waistband and it has a pin that can be pulled, it sets off a very high decibel alarm that would attract a lot of attention and maybe  take a would be thief off guard.  About $9.95   www.tbotech.com
