I've never seen marauding gypsies in Italy. That's not to say that there are
no gypsies in Rome. They are one of the sources of the major pick-pocket
problem Rome has. Especially on the subway during rush hour. Or at a bus
stop during rush hour. Or basically anywhere there would be a large crowd of
tightly packed people that makes their job so much easier.
Be very conscious of where you carry things in your pockets.
I personally have not been a victim, but I know people who have had their
pockets picked.
