[Idyllchat] Pepper spray or the like

Can anyone give me information about the desirability or lack thereof of 
carrying pepper spray or whatever cyclists and mail deliverers use when 
we in areas or countries populated by marauding gypsies?  We were 
attacked in St.Petersburg several years ago.  My husband was knocked to 
the ground, his glasses were broken, and his dignity was tried.  And 
although we had been properly warned, it did not occur to us that the 
whole pack of fourteen would isolate and concentrate on my husband. Any 
thoughts or advice will be helpful since we are going on a three week 
Untour to Rome this April.  Thanks. Pat
