892+ $110 taxes & fees = $1,002 per person LAX to Zurich in mid July on US Air. Checked Kayak.com, cheap tickets and US Air web site. Ouch

My wife and I will be in Kandersteg (Sept.11-26), staying in the Agerter apartment. As past users of Untours, we know wee will be getting a lost of information. There is so much to do and see! We like to eat, drink good wine, walk(as level as possible), hang with the locals, shop, just about everything. We have been to Zermatt, so that can be crossed off the list(maybe). We do want to take at less one scenic train ride. Also, what kind of clothes for this time of year? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My wife an I got snowed on in Zermatt in August. Really, anything can happen
in the Alps as far as weather goes.

We are going to be in Meiringen Sept. 11-19 and Locarno (Ticino) Sept. 19-26

I'm planning on bringing layers of clothing that I can put on and take off
as needed (I carry a big day pack with a real hip belt everywhere). If you
are going to go to anywhere at altitude, it could easily drop below
freezing, but plan on it being no warmer than 35-45. Lower altitudes could
be much warmer. Since we are going to Ticino as well, I am going to need to
pack clothes that can take me from summer temps. to winter. Since we like to
hike, I could go from summer to winter in the same day. Fleece is a
wonderful thing. With 2 fleece pullovers and a windbreaker, you can
comfortably go from 75 degrees to 40 degrees and still be warm. And they
pack pretty easily into a daypack.

Good luck on your trip, and be prepared for anything.

     - Jay

We're going a little farther afield this summer, to Scotland. We have
arranged housing through Home at First.

It would most helpful to have suggestions for a reasonably priced hotel in
Edinburgh in close proximity to the Royal Mile.

Your helpful suggestions, as always, are greatly appreciated.

  Janet

  Dear fellow tourists,

I'm sure you have gotten all the information you need by now, but just in case you haven't here is my input. (I just recently joined the Idyllchat and so hadn't read your question until now.) My husband and I went to Provence last May and on to Paris. It was a wonderful trip. We went to every historical sight we could in Provence and included a weekend trip to the Riviera. After the two weeks in Provence, we left the car at the train station in Avignon and took the train to Paris. (Buy your train ticket early when you get to Provence at the the Isle-sur-la-Sorgue train station. You need both a ticket and a reservation. The girl at the counter spoke just a little English and we managed to get what we needed.) We stayed a week in Paris at the Untour recommended hotel, Bretonnerie. Paris is glorious. The museums are awesome. We also took a night riverboat tour. Lovely. Paris is a place I would like to go back to. By the way, I'm a big fan of Rick Steves' books and h
e has one on both Paris and Provence. Worth your money ten times over.

Feel free to write back if you have more questions.

I have been on many Venice city tours and day trips with Avventure Bellissime - www.tours-italy.com When you get to the site click on Venice.

It's a first-class operation, with only English-speaking guides. (The owners are from England.) On the day trips into the countryside they use a van and carry no more than 8 people.

A nice small neighborhood restaurant is Dona Onesta. When I was there no English was spoken, and we were the only non-Venetians there. We tried two Venetian specialties - sardines en saor(sp), and liver and onions - and both were excellent.

Another restaurant I like is in Campo San Toma'. I've never been inside because they have a big outdoor dining area on the campo. Many Venetians, but also some tourists. Their sgroppino is one of the best.

If you find a small neighborhood restaurant with locals inside, you can't go wrong. And sit back at any bar (cafe) in any campo and enjoy a spritz with Aperol and people-watch for as long as you wish.

  Enjoy, Lynanne

Here is another daytrip I like to take each year in Venice, and you don't need a tour.

With your all-inclusve vaporetto pass, get on the #1 vaporetto and travel to Lido. Get off the water bus and get on the land bus that parks on the main street (Elizabeth, I think). That bus will take you the length of Lido, then it gets on a ferry to go to Pelistrina. The bus then travels the length of that island. At the end, you get off the bus and get on a passenger ferry to go to Chioggia, a little quaint fishing village.

It really is a day trip because the travel is about 2 hours each way. But what a lovely no-hassle way to see the lagoon and the little villages along the way. After we spent some time in Chioggia, while waiting for the bus in Pelistrina, my daughters wanted to walk a little way down the road and go onto the sand and stick their toes into the Adriatic Sea. They loved it!

One year I needed directions , so stopped into The American Cafe. Noone spoke English! That is the same year I had asked my native Venetian landlord to help with directions in Chioggia. When he called, he couldn't understand their Chioggian dialect!

How long will you be in Venice?

  Lynanne

We're first-time Untourists, heading to Paris March 28. We'll be staying in an apartment in the same building as "Gracieuse," in the Latin Quarter between rue Mouffetard and rue Monge. We would appreciate hearing from people familiar with that location who can tell us about the neighborhood and favorite places to eat close at hand, etc.

  Thanks! Frank & Ethlyn

hi there untours, I'm planning to purchase our own plane fares from Los Angeles to Zurich for our untour to Switzerland in July 2007. Do any of you know when and how to catch a low point in air fares. the lowest I've seen so far is $1275 per person with tax, which is a bit much for the 3 of us. Thanks, Phil
