My wife an I got snowed on in Zermatt in August. Really, anything can happen
in the Alps as far as weather goes.
We are going to be in Meiringen Sept. 11-19 and Locarno (Ticino) Sept. 19-26
I'm planning on bringing layers of clothing that I can put on and take off
as needed (I carry a big day pack with a real hip belt everywhere). If you
are going to go to anywhere at altitude, it could easily drop below
freezing, but plan on it being no warmer than 35-45. Lower altitudes could
be much warmer. Since we are going to Ticino as well, I am going to need to
pack clothes that can take me from summer temps. to winter. Since we like to
hike, I could go from summer to winter in the same day. Fleece is a
wonderful thing. With 2 fleece pullovers and a windbreaker, you can
comfortably go from 75 degrees to 40 degrees and still be warm. And they
pack pretty easily into a daypack.
Good luck on your trip, and be prepared for anything.
