Rome/ColosseumVickie,
We have been to the Colosseum twice; the first time on a tour and the second without. I'd go for the tour.
You can get the same information from a good guidebook, but the tour made it come alive, at least for me.
No need to book a tour in advance. I believe you can pick one up on the spot.
Beware the guys dressed like Roman Centurians outside of the Colosseum wanting you to pose with them for a photo. If you snap a photo, they want payment.
Our Venice Untour was one of our favorites of maybe a dozen Untours. Switzerland is our all-time favorite, but Venice is close behind.
We loved walking the city, and the really neat part is that the tourists from the big tour buses usually don't arrive in the city until about 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. and have to leave by about 4:00 p.m. to get to their hotels in Venice-Mestre on the mainland. So after about 4:00 p.m. you pretty much have the place to yourself.
Venice is a living museum. A new story unfolds with every bridge you cross and every street you walk down. Enjoy!
We stayed in the La Fenice Untours apartment and loved it, with its very private and lovely courtyard garden where we had many glasses of wine while listening to the passing gondoliers singing "O, Solo Mio" to their customers.

We are planning our Rome/Venice Untour scheduled for May and wondered what Untourists recommend for visiting the Colosseum. There seem to be a variety of options....booking ahead, booking a tour, the Roma Pass, the Archeologica Card.
What have been some of your experiences?
Thanks.
Vickie
