Hi Judy,
We stayed in San Rocco as well and it's well located and comfortable. The little private courtyard Lynneanne mentioned was where I sat and wrote in my journal in the evenings. Almost every evening I'd hear a squeaking and look up to see a woman with a large smile and hear "Buona sera Senora!" from the lady on the top (third-to us, second to them) floor as she pulled in her laundry. It's a wonderful neighborhood and you'll get to know the shopkeepers and maybe the elderly gentleman who greeted us most mornings in the courtyard leading to the street as he was entering or leaving with or for his morning sweets. He always greeted us with a deep bow and another lovely greeting for a good day. It's also near Campo Santa Margharita, my favorite in Venice. Check your guide book for it. It's a delight to just visit and mingle or sit and watch, in the afternoons especially when mothers and their babies and toddlers, teenagers and college students gather along with their dogs.
There's fresh fruit and flower stands there and markets and bakeries on the way. The apartment is at the intersection of two canals where the gondoliers, usually singing, bring the tourists off the Grand Canal and make a sharp right. We would sit on the "corner" of the canal in the evening with a glass of wine, a sketch book on my part and a camera on my husbands part. Upon seeing my husband, the inveterate videographer, the gondoliers invariably sang with more gusto and animation. Don't miss the Scoulla San Rocco (sp?)--you're right next door and it has, in my opinion, some of the best art in Venice. In the evenings there are generally good street performers in front of it and next to the church where the acoustics enhance their efforts.
