Hi Eleanor,
I think you would enjoy the Rhine Untour. We were in St. Goar in May
of 2000 and in December of 2004 we were in Kaub. Both were lovely
cities. St. Goar is perhaps a little more tourist oriented, but it is
an exciting place to stay. The train and the boat are within 5 minutes
of your apartment. There are plenty of places to dine and I enjoyed
watching the tourist. After all, you are an untourist, so you are a
semi-resident. There is easy access to towns up and down the Rhine and
the Mosel rivers. You can not do justice to your visit in 2 weeks. I
would start each day off with a visit to the bakery, the butcher and
the grocery store. After breakfast we would take off on a adventure to
visit many of the surrounding cities. The winery in Winegan is a
worthwhile visit. The locals are friendly and we were made to feel at
home. Your rail pass will get you anywhere you need to go within a few
hours travel at the most. We even took a day trip to Luxemburg. After
a few days of visiting some of the shops on a regular basis, the locals
begin to accept you when they recognize you. If you like exploring
castles and historic places, I would recommend the Rhine Untour. The
vineyards on the Rhine and Mosel rivers are a sight to see.
Our 2004 Winter Untour took us to many of the Christmas markets. There
are not as many tourists in the Winter, so the shop owners liked to
spend more time visiting with the tourists. I think your September
trip will be a comfortable time to travel with a few less crowds.
If you would like more details, please feel free to write.
