Casey,
My 2 friends and I were in Rome this past September on our to the Amalfi coast. We stayed at a convent just down from the Coliseum. It was pretty cheap for Rome and although not fancy, the room was spotless and we had our own bathroom. A continental breakfast was served in the morning and they had a rooftop terrace that you could sit out at night and view Rome. You could purchase a bottle of wine from them for 2 euros! Their website is: irodopre at tin.it I think a triple room cost us 118 euro a night. The name of the convent is Istituto Il Rosario.

A few years ago we stayed at the Lancelot Hotel, that is also near the Coliseum. It was a small, but lovely hotel. Owners spoke very good english. A double room cost us at that time 142 euro a night.

Either place is a good choice, but if fancy is not your priority, I would go with the convent.
