[Idyllchat] Hiking Sticks

My wife is a horse trainer and has a rather specialized training device called a carrot stick. It is an orange fiberglass stick about three and half feet long. When traveling on an airline she packs it into a PVC tube and includes the tube with her checked baggage. The PVC tube is just an ordinary piece of drain pipe that we bought at Home Depot. We closed the ends with the same PVC "pipe caps" that are normal plumbing fittings. We did this rather than a mailing tube because it offers more protection to the contents. Other than worrying if the tube will actually be routed to the same place she's going this has proved to be hassle free for her. Maybe you can do the same with a piece of pipe of sufficient diameter to accept your walking sticks.

Looking for your help - we're packing for our trip to Heartland and Alsace, and have switched to smaller luggage this year. Consequently, our hiking sticks no longer fit, and I'm looking for an option to get the sticks checked through. Has anyone used something like a cardboard tube to pack the hiking sticks? Or is there something available similar to the bags you see people using for sending skiis in checked luggage?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
