[Idyllchat] Florence/ Cinque Terre in September

We are getting very excited about our upcoming Tuscany North untour (first untour for us).  We're looking for advice about visiting Florence (we will take the train from Pisa) and Cinque Terre (drive and stay overnight - we hope to do a lot of hiking).  I read somewhere (I think in one of the trip reports on the Untours site) that we should avoid weekends in Cinque Terre.  Any additional comments on that?  

What about Florence?  Other than avoiding Mondays, are there big differences in crowds on the other days?

Any specific advice or suggestions would be welcome.  Yes, we've read the trip reports and numerous guide books - just looking for any personal favorites or experiences in either of those places!
