Hi Lyanne: This topic sure gets everyones attention--every time. I am not a financial wizard, but with ATM's in abundance (shady ones too) why pay a $40. bank fee for Euros before you leave? That is assuming you have a bank card (or credit union, etc.) that does not charge fees. Capitol One always mentioned as a no-fee card. I have a no-fee through my financial retirement account. Whole different story if your bank card charges fees. As most travelers, we have a little stash of Euros/Pounds, CHF's left over to take the next trip--before we "meet" our first ATM (and that is usually at the airport).
Perhaps we're missing something in your scenario? 2 months in Venice--ummm wonderful! Joan.

Yes Reberta, these figures are correct!! Are they too high or too low?

I don't think these figures are correct. Was there a typo?

I've just returned from two months in Venice, living in an apartment off Via Garibaldi.
Before I left home, I figured out how many euros I expected to use. For $40 I had my bank get me 4700 euros (that included my rent). Going over, that money was in a waist belt under my clothes.
It worked out great! I never had to worry about about ATMs and whether or not they were working, or having the sun shine on the screen so I couldn't see it. While there, I kept the money in the apartment and just put in my pocketbook what I thought I'd need for the day.
For a backup, I had with me a Master Card and a Visa Debit Card. Didn't need them. It was great to be able to have cash on hand and not worry about finding a working ATM.
