We just returned a week ago from a Swiss Sampler Untour - Ticino and Heartland. We used our credit union card extensively rather than our Chase ATM card which they said charged a 3 percent fee per transaction. The credit union card is a combination ATM card and debit card. The statement came in the mail today and the ATM fees varied widely. The charge at UBS was 50 cents. One Reisebank transaction cost 50 cents but two that happened to post on the same day cost $1.50. Withdrawals from the PostFinance machine cost us 1 percent extra. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the fees, either by the ATM owner or by our credit union.
Go figure.
Walt.

I really started something when I said I've been using an AAA Cash Passport card for years abroad and found it very satisfactory. I didn't find the initial cost for the card of $4.95 excessive or the $2 fee charged at ATMs by some. For some mysterious reason, I wasn't charged anything by a few. I don't know what the conversion rate is but will check it on my next trip abroad which will be in September. I'll also use a credit card to compare. I appreciate much the comments by all.
