[Idyllchat] Re: IdyllChat Digest, off season in Holland

We did 11 days in Leiden in the Frans Hal apt in January/ February. Loved it. The bus was a block a way; the bakery was one block and the grocery was 2 but right next to a bus stop. Lots of restaurants near by and all good with a variety of cuisines. With the rail pass we went everywhere. The year we were there was the 400th anniversary so every Rembrandt in the country was out. The weather was overcast or damp and in the 40's in the day time and 30's at night. When the sun was out it was COLD with a wind. We dressed for it and went on our way. Leiden is a great university town with lots of students and the things that go with it. It is 20 minutes to Amsterdam; 45 minutes to Rotterdam never more than an hour to most other places. You can by 45 bus tickets for about 20 euros and they are good everywhere in the country. NO CROWDS
It was a great trip

Has anyone done the Holland off-season? We noticed the great
off-season price for Holland in November when the average temperature
is in the 40Fs - which is an OK temperature for us. Can you give us
any guidance? Are we nuts to consider this time of the years there?

 Ed

I did Holland (Leyden) in the off-season about 4-years ago and if Idyll keeps twisting my arm I will certainly return. I've been through Holland in the Tulip season and it was gorgeous but crowded. In November there are no Tulips and few tourists. I, like you, do not mind cool, damp weather. Maybe it's selective forgetting but I can't remember but one or two of the fourteen days' stay when there was no sun. One fond memory was watching some of the Dutch on their bikes peddling like crazy. chatting on their cell phones, some even managing to hold an umbrella!!!!
So, if you don't mind doing without the services of the host and purchasing your own transportation tickets, I can't think of any reason not to go "Dutch" in November!

We did the Holland Untour in the summer but, as we were on an "art orgy," it could have been any time of the year. There are wonderful museums, art and otherwise, all over Holland, most conveniently accessed with public transportation.

Examples include the famous ones like the Rijksmusuem and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in the Hague, the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem and the Kroller-Muller Museum in De Hoge Veluwe National Park

Some of the smaller museums we enjoyed were the Lakenhal Municipal Museum, the National Museum of Antiquities, the Museum Boerhaave and the windmill De Valk in Leiden, the Prince William V Gallery in the Hague, De Moriann and the Stedelijk Museum in Gouda, the Amstelkring Museum and the Willet-Holthuysen Museum in Amsterdam, and the Museum Lambert and Leger Museum in Delft.

If gardens are not your primary interest and you're happy with cooler weather, then I'm guessing Holland in "off" season will be perfect for you. The architecture, churches and interesting food are still there - and probably more enjoyable with fewer tourists.

Subject: Re: [Idyllchat] Groceries in Giswil

We returned yesterday from Giswil after a week at the von Moos residence.
We found the grocery there to be complete for our needs. Along with the
family butcher shop and the small bakery we did quite well. It should be
noted that we are pretty basic in regards to food. We are not gourmets
and food is not a major interest or attraction. If that is someone's bent then
they need to expand their shopping sphere. The Coop in Interlaken Ost is
very convenient to the train station and is huge even by US standards.
We didn't stop in Sarnen so can't comment on that.

We thought the types of food available in all the grocery stores (Locarno,
Interlaken, Giswil) to be very much like we would find in the US. The usual
vegetables and fruits are available. For example, like here, fresh apples
from New Zealand are available. Canned goods and convenience items
like bottled pasta sauce and frozen pizza are readily available in Giswil
as well as the bigger stores. We always saw some selections of Kellog's
breakfast cereals but also like some of the muesli so give that a try.
One thing to look for if you are a first-timer is that you are expected to
weight your own produce. There is a special scale to weight your items.
You punch in the two digit code for your particular variety and it spits out
 the barcoded label.

Neither are we very well educated regarding wines. Our preference is for
German Moselle and Rhine wines and found the White Merlot from Ticino
to be very good. At the Bahnhof Hotel in Giswil we had a botte of the
house white and it was excellent. I believe the bartender said it came
 from Bern.

Food shopping should not be a worry. Try a new twist on some of your
favorites and throw in an experiment once in a while, too.

Howdy,
We have stayed twice in Giswil and prepared most of our meals... We stayed
at the home of the parents of the butcher, Herr von Moos, who has some
excellent sausages and other meats in his shop. (If you run into Lisbeth and
Leo von Moos, please tell them that Anne and Dennis Carpenter say hello and
hope they are doing well.) If we were staying in Giswil (generally not) for
the day, we got baked goods from the bakery between the butcher and our
place. (It also has a small grocery connected to it.) As Vance said, Sarnen
is a great place for fresh fruits, vegetables, and different bakeries.

Hi,
We are going on an untour in the Swiss heartland in a few weeks - Giswil
to be specific. We are planning on doing most of our own cooking. Does
anyone have any advice about what types of food we should expect to find
in Swiss groceries?
Thanks,
Guy

From a recent post, I saw a reference to muesli. Familia in Sachseln
makes a good variety, but the brands in COOP and MIGROS are good too.
Unless you have only flakes, it will be much better if you put the
cereal in a bowl and cover it with the milk of your choice the night
before you wish to eat it. Of course, you need to put this in the
fridge overnight. If you don't "soak" the muesli overnight, you will
be eating something akin to raw oatmeal in milk. Most of the mueslis
have chopped fruit and nuts in them.

It is a great meal for any time of day and will keep you filled for
many hours. One of the best health foods of which I know.

Le Lion d'Or in Bayeux would be a good choice.

      Dear Karl,

In March we spent a night at the Churchill Hotel. It is right in the center of Bayeux within easy walking distance of the Bayeux Tapestry and a few blocks from the Cathedral. The people at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. Several D-Day Beach tour companies pickup at the end of their parking lot.

Hotel Rheine Mathilde in Bayeaux is a small hotel in Bayeaux--the ideal
location for touring the Normandy area. It is very near the Churchill that
another poster mentioned, but slightly less money. It is also very near the
cathedral and tapestry. The male owner cooks in a small garden restaurant
at the hotel. Here is a website where you can view some visitor reviews:

Also, don't miss reading Vance and Barbara Roy's blogs on their visit to
Normandy earlier this year. It is excellent, and also provides a
gastronomic overview. Vance is a blog specialist! If you need guidance in
getting to the blogs, let me know. Happy planning. Joan.
