Andrea:  In checking the backs of both the master card and visa debit 
cards that I used last fall in Italy, England, and Scotland with no 
problem I see that MC uses the Cirrus network and Visa the Plus, 
Interlink, and Star networks.  You just need to find a bank ATM that 
honors the network listed on the back of your card.  In general I have 
found European stores a little more willing to take MC because that is 
equivalent to (or affiliated with) their Eurocard.  If you see the 
Eurocard insignia on a restaurant or store door I think there would be 
no problem using the mastercard.  But I had no problem using either of 
these cards in September and October of 2006.
